Contemporary Guesthouse in Kirkland

Scroll

Perched above a garage with one side serving as a retaining wall for the steep Lake Washington hillside, this 400-square-foot ADU exemplifies small-space living with precision and artistry. Designed by Thielsen Architects, Willkens Construction, and Studio C, the residence balances function and beauty.

Floor-to-ceiling metal-framed windows flood the space with natural light while framing panoramic views of Seattle’s eastern shoreline. Rich materials add warmth and depth—wire-brushed oak floors, luminous plaster walls, and cerused rift white oak cabinetry extend seamlessly into slatted ceiling panels. A bespoke blown-glass light fixture casts an ethereal glow over the dining skylight, enhancing the ambiance.

The kitchen pairs efficiency with sophistication, featuring a leathered granite waterfall countertop and backsplash. A live-edge walnut dining table extends from the peninsula, serving as a multifunctional gathering space. Thoughtfully placed skylights brighten the interiors, while expansive folding glass doors lead to an outdoor deck, blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor living. This meticulously designed retreat is a masterclass in compact luxury.
